KEVIN Pietersen became the latest to ‘try out’ the position of opener alongside Andrew Strauss as England beat Canada by 16 runs in their first World Cup warm-up match.

He made 24 as England posted 243 on a slow wicket and, at one stage, were 158-7.

Matt Prior, whose stint as opener in the ODI’s in Australia was a flop, batted at No 6 and top scored with 78 off 80 balls sharing a fifth wicket stand of 54 with Jonathan Trott, 57, and then a crucial one later on of 51 for the eighth wicket with Stuart Broad, 22.

When Canada slumped to 28-5 it looked all over but Rizwan Charma smashed 93 off just 71 balls before Broad returned to claim him as one of five victims but Canada needed only 17 off four overs when the last wicket fell.
