Clinton puts body and soul into title defence

CLINTON Woods will be aiming to take the body tomorrow night.

Sheffield's light-heavyweight world champion thinks that he will have more chance of stopping challenger Julio Gonzalez with a barrage of shots to his trunk.

That and a mixture of his rock-solid jab, should be enough to retain his IBF title at Sheffield Arena, believes the Ridgeway man.

Referring back to his win two years over the same opponent, Woods told The Star: "I need to get my jab working; that was the main thing last time against Gonzalez - a good solid jab.

"Maybe this time following up with a right hand to work his body. One of the main things about this fight is to work his body.

"It is one of the things about Mexicans, they are sometimes a little bit weak there.

"I love throwing body shots. There is nothing better than hitting people in the gut - and they make the noise that you know you have got them!"

Woods was awarded the last contest on points, the judges giving him a healthy margin of 117-111, 118-112 and 116-112.

He said: "I thought it was a hard fight ... I thought it was close. But on video I was surprised how convincingly I won it."

Woods has a keen interest in the fact the Mexican has never been stopped in 40 professional fights and 200 amateur contests.

"He's been on the canvas a few times but always got up to win," he said,

"That's probably one of his main attributes, his chin.

"Gonzalez throws a lot of punches and he has a great durability."
