Canadians 'will act as role models'

STEVE MUNN and Joe Talbot will emerge as leaders within Sheffield Steelers' 2007-8 team.

That is the view of coach Dave Matsos, who believes the experience and outgoing personalities of the two Canadians will mark them out as role models.

Matsos has installed quiet, but respected, Welshman Jonathan Phillips as skipper.

It is not yet known who will support Phillips as assistants.

But Matsos says he believes the new imports, generally, will emerge as influences, on the younger players particularly.

Of 29-year-old Munn, an 111-game AHL veteran, he says: "Steve is a big man, who has won championships and has had letters on his shirt - As and Cs (assistant captain and captain) in teams he has played for.

"Talbot has a very decorative resume also. Where he has played in the past he has not been part of the support cast, he has been a front-man and the feedback I have from him is outstanding.

"In the big games, he steps up a level. He has nerves of steel because he has been there before."

Talbot, 27, has just completed four seasons with Alaska Aces in the ECHL and has had five try-outs with AHL club Peoria Rivermen.

The two new men will be crucial if Steelers are to win a title and go some way towards filling the Arena.

Matsos accepts attendances at Broughton Lane could have been better last year.

"We have to improve every area we can. Last year was disappointing because we didn't win a championship.

"But my expectations are clear for this year. All we can do is our best we can and hope that the crowds follow."

general manager Mike O'Connor says Steelers are better prepared than at any time in recent years.

"Everyone off ice has worked harder than ever," he said. "I remember you didn't want to have little problems off the ice, you just wanted to concentrate on practice, training hard and then resting for the games ahead. Our preparation this year means there is nothing for the guys to concern themselves with other than winning games."
