Sheffield world title hunter heads for New York showdown

Have your say

Sheffield warrior Kell Brook has been told his IBF world title shot against Shawn Porter will be on on August 9 at the Barclay’s Centre, New York.

After years of waiting, the unbeaten Yorkshireman now has two months before his biggest challenge.

The slick Ingle welterweight will step-up his training and conditioning now, delighted that he has a date and venue to focus on.

It will be a career-defining fight - and he already has a few Sheffield fans making plans to join him on his big night in the Big Apple.

Meanwhile, Sheffield promoter Dennis Hobson saw his boxer Stuart Hall outpointed in his IBF Bantamweight title bout last night as he lost to compatriot Paul Butler.

* Two Sheffield boxers boosted a charity campaign aimed at raising £20,000 for Weston Park Hospital’s teenage Cancer Unit, on Friday night.

Adam Etches and Scott Jenkins were the star attraction at Sheffield’s Owlerton dog track stadium in a dinner and racenight, organised by their manager, Richard Poxon.

The pair spoke on video about why they are supporting the campaign - apologies for the windy background noise at the start of the interview.

Jenkins said that the evening’s get-together and other events should exceed the target they started out with.

Etches said he felt for the many people who were touched by cancer: “It is important for me and Scott to try our hardest to raise as much as we can.”

A close family member of Jenkins’ is currently fighting the disease.

The Star and Owlerton stadium has thrown its weight behind the campaign.

The Star will continue to highlight the issue, in the months ahead.
