Kell Brook could be fighting in his home town of Sheffield on December 8.
No opponent has been announced, but it could be WBO light middleweight champion Jaime Munguia.
Munguia has been told he will be campaigning on that day but doesn't know a location.
Brook's promoter Eddie Hearn told Sky Sports a home town show was likely before a meeting with Amir Khan in February or March.
"Kell will probably box in Sheffield on December 8. He hasn't boxed since March, Amir obviously just boxed and I am hopeful and excited that this fight, that has eluded us for so long, could be close to happening."
The most likely venue for a pre-Christmas Brook show would be Sheffield Arena - but there's a problem there.
Ice hockey club Sheffield Steelers are scheduled to play champions Cardiff Devils on that night - and the Arena has publicly stated that Steelers are now regarded as a priority tenant of the building.
The 22-year-old Munguia is from Baja California, Mexico and is being touted for big things by promoters Golden Boy.
He has a fearsome won 31 lost none record, with 26 KOs.
His last fight was a win over Brandon Cook - who Brook was going to fight before sustaining an injury, earlier this year.
Cook was stopped in Las Vegas by Munguia.
Former world champion Brook, 32, has only fought once since losing to Errol Spence Jr a year last May, at Bramall Lane.
The Dore man, back in Sheffield after training in Fuertaventua, has tweeted that he is "hungry to get back in there."
