There will be no snarling across the ring when Gavin McDonnell defends his British title against South Yorkshire rival Josh Wale later this month.

In fact, their meeting could easily be termed the ‘friendly derby,’ such is the respect shown by the two men, who fought previously in September last year.

McDonnell said: “He deserves this fight which is why we gave him the shot.

“It’s going to be a great fight.

“It’s my first defence. It’s a re-match with Josh.

“It was a great fight the first time around and I’m expecting the same again but turned up a notch or two with it being a British title fight.

“A British title for someone can get that extra 10 or 20 per cent out of them and I think we’ll see that with Josh.

Wale joined in with the show of respect and said: “I’ve got a tremendous amount of respect for Gavin for giving me this fight.

“We had a tough 12 rounds the last time we fought so he deserves a lot of credit for defending his title against me.”

Dunscroft super bantamweight McDonnell will defend his British crown against Barnsley’s Wale on May 21 at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.
