Sheffield’s POW! Fitness boxing gym - opened amid a blaze of publicity in March - has closed down.
Part owner Ryan Rhodes says the doors of the large-scale operation on The Moor, officially opened in March by Sugar Ray Leonard, were closed for the last time last Saturday.
However, he and former world champion and Sky TV presenter Johnny Nelson, have joined forces to open a new base a few yards away on London Road.
It will be called 26RR Fitness.
Rhodes said the Pow closure was not triggered by finances, but “other reasons” he was unwilling to talk about.
Equipment from the old site is now being transferred to the new site.
“Our members have been brilliant, they are following us over the road to the new place. The flooring and the equipment is coming over in stages, too” said Rhodes.
“We now have a smaller building, but it is still 7,500 square feet and we are going to make a good go of it.”
Rhodes said he and Nelson had been close friends since their days together as boxers at Brendan Ingle’s gym in Wincobank.
“We sat down and talked about it - and everything soon started falling into place.”
Meanwhile, Clinton Woods’ boxing gym in Westfield is going from strength to strength. Woods said: “I can’t believe how busy we are, we are packed most of the time.”
Wood’s professional boxer, Eckington cruiserweight Joss Paul, 25, is back in the gym after suffering a hand injury.
