London’s Mayor has offered an open invitation for the capital city to host the one boxing match we’d all love to see - Kell Brook versus Amir Khan.
Sadiq Khan, whose brother is a boxing coach, was thrilled when the 02 Arena was used to host the Gennady Golovkin v Brook spectacle last month - a show which recorded a sell-out in minutes.
Sheffield’s Brook, who suffered a broken eye socket against GGG, is likely to be out until Spring next year.
And it’s not clear whether he will return to welterweight or move up.
But Sheffield’s Brook has always handed to get his hands on Khan, from Bolton.
The Lancashire man has snubbed the offer of a match-up in the past, but now implies that Brook would be worthy as an opponent.
The Mayor said: ““London was the perfect host for the unmissable fight between the undisputed pound for pound king in Golovkin and our very own Kell Brook. Both for our city, and the thousands of boxing fans in London, staging the best fights is something we could all get used to.
“I want to see the biggest sporting and cultural events staged here in London because we not only have world-class venues to stage top-class boxing, but we also have the globe’s best fight fans.
“London is open to the best talent in the world and that is why I am keen to see another super-fight in the capital and what better one to start with than arch rivals Amir Khan and Kell Brook both in the ring at Wembley Stadium? London is neutral territory and I think it is a contest the
British public and London fight fans would love to see.”
Brook did himself no harm by taking the GGG fight, both in financial terms and his profile.
He is certainly on Keith Thurman’s radar.
The WBA welterweight title holder from Florida said: “I’ve always loved the idea of an Errol Spence-Kell Brook fight, he said referring to 21-fight unbeaten American.
Thurman also offered himself as bait for Brook -a contest that has been mooted before.
“I wish Kell a full recovery so we can give fight fans and the world of boxing what it truly needs.”
Thurman said Brook should use some of his hefty GGG purse to ensure full recovery.
“I hope he received the best pay cheque of his career and invests in the best doctors and physical therapy...it could play out as a very horrible business and career decision” said Thurman.
