FOUR local boxers are through to the National ABA quarter-finals on Sunday after winning their way through the Yorkshire ABA Senior Finals at Sheffield’s Colley WMC.
Joe Rodgers, from host club Parson Cross ABC, had a terrific fight in the 60k class, against David Wong of Rotherham’s Millennium ABC, with Rodger’s class and skill edging it against a very strong opponent to win by 10-7.
Lewis Taylor, of Hillsborough ABC, was also on form against fellow Sheffield boxer Tom McCassey of Unity ABC. McCassey, showing style typical of the Ingle stable, found the much-experienced Taylor too much and Taylor won 18-8.
One of the closest contests was the 19-18 win for Matthew Neilson of Denaby’s Tom Hill ABC over Bradford’s Alan Vanzie at 81k.
Neilson steamed ahead in the first two rounds but Vanzie stormed back in the final round only to just miss out.
James Hughes of Doncaster’s Highfields ABC was a 9-1 winner over Ryan Felstead of Tom Hill ABC.
The national quarter-finals on Sunday are at Havercroft Sports Centre, Royston, Barnsley.
Runners-up included Mo Fazildan (Unity ABC) and Adam Townend (Hard and Fast ABC, Barnsley) pipped 19-18 in his bout.
