DONCASTER Plant Works’ Jake Westlake booked his place in the semi-finals of the Junior ABA’s with an 8-4 win over
Liam Beresford (Impact) in their quarter-final in Birmingham on Sunday.
Although Westlake proved a worthy winner of the Class Five Under-63kg bout which never really took off.
“My lad caught Beresford early on with a good shot and after that he kept his distance,” said Plant coach Ken Blood.
“Westlake tried to force the pace but he could have done better at closing him down than he did. Having said that, he was always on top.”
Stablemate James Mitchison bowed out of the Class Six Under-75kg championships after losing 13-10 on points against Warley’s Sam Eggington, beaten just five times in 26 bouts.
“Although my lad lost he can feel proud of himself,” said
Blood. “He was up against a very good opponent but he made him work for his win. It was easily his best fight.”
