DONCASTER’S Jamie Hughes is aiming to become the first Highfields ABC boxer to win at Elite ABA title in Colchester tonight.
The 27 year-old cruiserweight, who won the ABA (Under-ten bouts) Novice title last year, takes on Londoner Deion Jumah in the 86kg final.
Hughes upset the odds in both the quarter-finals and the semi-finals - booking his place in the final with an impressive display over 2009 champion Wayne Adenyi at Everton - and will need to do so again tonight.
“Jumah is a former kick-boxing champion and is a bit of a banger,” said Highfields coach John Loosemore.
“He’s really come on in the last twelve months, What we don’t want is Jamie to stand there trading punches.
“Although he can both give and take a punch, his best asset is his movement and we want him make it hard for Jumah to hit him.
Doncaster super-heavyweight Carl Spencer (Youth Inclusion Programme ABC) boxed for England against Canada at the weekend, stopping his opponent in the second round.
Spencer, along with former National Schoolboys’ champion Antony Carolan, won a Yorkshire ABA belt outright, Aston Jolly had two failed challenges at 75kg and 82kg.
