Hughes aims to defy odds in semi-final

DONCASTER’S Jamie Hughes knows that he will need to produce a knockout performance at Everton Leisure Centre tomorrow if he is to win through to the Elite ABA finals.

The 27-year-old cruiserweight, who won the Novice ABA title last season, faces local favourite Wayne Adeniyi in the semi-finals.

Hughes goes into the contest as the underdog.

“Adeniyi is a much more experienced boxer than Jamie, having won through to the national final before,” said Highfields coach John Loosemore.

“He has a good record and is a formidable opponent. But Jamie was in a similar situation in the quarter-finals against an opponent who was in the Great Britain development squad, and who also had a better record. But he won every round.

“Jamie knows what he has to do. I’ve heard that Adeniyi likes to stand off and look for the big shot because he is a strong lad so I don’t want him to try trading punches with him.”
