Dalton Smith is heading to Samoa for the Commonwealth Youth Games. How do you see this young lad developing?
If he turns pro then I’m out there like any other promoter; his camp know where I am. If they want to speak to others and see who the best promoter is for them, then let it be. I’m open, and I’d sit down with them and my track record speaks for itself. I’ve worked with fighters who maybe haven’t had the pedigree of Dalton and taken them on to be world champions. I don’t chase anybody, but if they wanted me to guide his career I’d be happy to, but good luck to him if he goes with another promoter. Hopefully he does himself and Sheffield proud.
Paul Silky Jones has finally get his hands on the world title belt he won 20 years ago. What are your recollections of him?
I promoted the fight where he won the world title. Tommy Gilmour and Barry Hearn brought the TV but I did all the promotion. It was a great night and Paul boxed out of his skin. It’s a shame that politics got involved after he won the title, when he got stripped of it. He could have defended in some great fights. But take nothing away from what he achieved that night. He’s got my respect and I’m glad he’s got his belt. It’s part of Sheffield’s heritage.
What do you make of Leeds’ Josh Warrington?
We almost signed Josh once. He’s a great kid and has caught the public’s imagination. He has put Leeds on the map, because the football team isn’t doing so well! Josh will always be in good scraps. Whether he wins a world title, I’m not sure, but what he’s already achieved is phenomenal.
What do you make of Shane Mosley’s decision to make a comeback two weeks short of his 44th birthday? Did Clinton Woods retire too early?
Shane is a friend of mine; he’s been talking about a comeback for a while. It’s all about the right fights. At 44, you’re always sceptical, but he’s sensible in not fighting a young man who’s on fire, he’s fighting a mature fighter. I think he’ll do a number on Ricardo Mayorga. As long as he comes through the health checks, then why not? When Clinton fought Tavoris Cloud, he wasn’t mentally in the best place. He’s still in phenomenal shape now, he’s got his own gym and is a success story and if he hadn’t had injuries he would’ve been a household name. I wish he’d boxed Carl Froch; Clinton would’ve had too much for him. He never ducked anybody and was in some huge fights but I’d like to have had him in some big domestic, marquee fights against Joe Calzaghe and Froch.
