Rotherham’s English light middleweight champion Nav Mansouri will put his title on the line in the New Year.

The 26-year-old boxer is likely to face a challenge from unbeaten north London bruiser Gary Corcoran.

It will be his first defence since his epic - and controversial - 10-rounder with Sam Sheedy in the Summer.

And Mansouri, who has been jinxed by a series of injuries over the past couple of year wants the fight with the 25-year-old Wembley warrior to springboard him towards bigger titles.

“It looks like Corcoran will be my next opponent, my manager has mentioned him to me - and that should be an interesting fight” said the South Yorkshireman who is trained by Oliver Harrison, in Manchester.

“He is a Frank Warren fighter, (14+0) so it might be staged down south and broadcast on Boxnation.

“I have watched a little bit of him and he is an aggressive come-forward fighter who does not hesitate or worry about getting hit. That would be great for me, I like a war. It should be a 100 mph battle, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Mansouri (W15 L1 D2) admits to have endured a “very slow” couple of years - injuries have meant he has only boxed twice since February last year. But he hopes his issues are behind him as he embarks on his 2016 campaign. “I’m ready for a hard eight-week camp after all the frustrations - injuries and lay offs are the worst thing ever. And boxers don’t get paid if they don’t fight!”

Many fans thought Mansouri was lucky to have been awarded the points win over Sheffielder Sheedy, at Magna, in July. But the champion said: “I knew I’d won it. I put a lot of pressure on him and I made that fight.

“If I’d have wanted to box on the back foot all night like he did it would have made a very boring event for the spectators. Who wants to watch two boxers try to out-counter each other?”

Asked if he’d fight Sheedy again, he replied: “If he has something to offer - but I don’t pick my fighters.”
