Boxing: Matty is Askin rejuvenated Dawson for a re-match

Have your say

Blackpool boxer Matty Askin says that cruiserweight rival Neil Dawson can have a re-match whenever he wants it.

Askin inflicted Dawson’s first loss as a professional two years ago in a Central Area title fight. Since then Askin has gone on to win the English title.

Barnsley-born Askin then fell short to Dawson’s next opponent Jon Lewis Dickinson but is chasing a re-match with whoever claims the British title.

Askin, who is nine years younger than Thorpe Hesley’s 33-year-old Dawson, has been impressed with the way he has rebuilt his career.

“I’d definitely fight Neil Dawson again. I think I got him at a good time,” he told The Star. “He punches really hard. Chris Keane was due to fight me but I think they saw Neil as a softer option and they got a shock.

“Neil has got two good wins over top kids in Keane and Tony Conquest so he has worked himself back up the rankings.

“He’s not getting any younger so I’m sure that he would jump at the chance of a re-match with me and I’d take it too because I know I can beat him again.”
