Ryan Rhodes has enlisted the support of one of the world’s best ever boxers to launch his new gym in Sheffield on March 12 (noon.)
Sugar Ray Leonard, named “Boxer of the Decade” for the 1980s, will give a speech at the POW gym (former Mothercare building on the Moor) before cutting the ribbon.
Other boxing VIPs like Kell Brook, Jamie Moore and Johnny Nelson will also be there. But it is the arrival of the 58-year-old legend that has excited Rhodes the most.
“Sugar Ray was a particular hero of mine” said Rhodes.
“I remember him coming back from a three year retirement to beat Marvin Hagler (1987) and his amazing fights with Roberto Duran and Tommy Hearns.
“For me he is the best of all time, with his charisma and style. I met him once at a Glyn Rhodes event at Sheffield Wednesday, but I can’t wait to meet him again.”
Leonard is now a motivational speaker who gives talks on fitness.
