RYAN RHODES is to target the European light-middleweight belt, a consolation for missing out on the WBC title earlier this month.

Trainer Dave Coldwell said: “Ryan’s defeat to Saul Alvarez was to a better fighter at elite level, we accept that. But underneath that elite level are other world titles and, as a start, we may be going after Lukas Konecny (Czech-born European and WBO Inter-Continental champion.)”

Rhodes has watched a recording of the Alvarez fight - he was stopped in the 12th round - and said: “It wasn’t as bad as I thought, but I know that he was one step ahead of me in every way. I was beaten by a true superstar.”

Rhodes revealed he was aware of brawling breaking out among spectators in Mexico, as he was being pummelled by Alvarez. “From the corner of my eye, I knew something was going on. But I realised that my lot (family and friends) were in a different part of the Arena, so I didn’t worry!” he said.
