Blades men backing Clinton title defence

SHEFFIELD United's players and staff have thrown their weight behind Clinton Woods.

And Bryan Robson's team are urging supporters to join them in their bid to cheer the IBF light-heavyweight champion to victory when he defends his title on Saturday night.

Robson is hoping to attend the bout which takes place after United's Championship fixture against Southampton at Bramall Lane and the majority of his first team squad are expected to join him at Sheffield Arena.

Despite being a follower of United's arch-rivals Sheffield Wednesday, Woods has become a familiar figure at Bramall Lane in recent years as his achievements are rightly recognised on both sides of the Steel City divide.

"It's fantastic for Sheffield to have its own world champion as we don't get many British boxers competing at this level now," Robson said.

Woods' Mexican opponent - Julio Gonzalez - boasts a series of notable scalps on his 41-3-0 record including Dariusz Michalczewski, Glen Johnson and Montell Griffin.

So to ensure he receives the best possible backing, Woods' Fight Academy stable are offering United season ticket holders a 10 per cent discount when purchasing two or more tickets. Children also go free when accompanied by a paying adult.

DANNY WEBBER: "Come on Clinton. All the boys at United are supporting you. I'm a bit of a boxing fan and I'll be cheering you on."

DEREK GEARY: "I've got so much respect for what you've achieved in boxing and boxers in general. Most of us are coming to watch you fight after our game. I'm sure you'll do it."
