Blades challenged to follow Foxes' lead to get out of League One

Nigel Adkins wants Sheffield United to follow the example of Premier League champions Leicester City as they attempt to secure promotion from League One next season.

Adkins’ side are tenth in League One ahead of Sunday’s game against Scunthorpe, which brings to an end another frustrating season for United.

But recent unbeaten run of 11 points from a possible 15 gave brief hope of a late play-off push, and Adkins believes the key to sustained success is simple: consistency.

“You see it everywhere,” the United boss said.

“Look at Leicester City, they have kept basically the same team throughout the season and how well have they done?

“I wanted, ideally, to keep an unchanged team at Coventry last weekend, but we couldn’t.

“That consistency was a factor to the good run we’d been on coming in. I don’t think it’s any surprise.”

Adkins will resist any temptation to make wholesale changes for the visit of his former club Scunthorpe, despite “one or two little knocks”.

“A few people have got bumps and bruises as you would expect at this stage,” he added.

“It will be the same elsewhere. But we want to win the game. Make no mistake about that. We take the same attitude into every single game we play.

“Matty Done took a whack in the face and a few hadn’t trained in the week before Coventry, but they showed character by going out there because we wanted to keep that consistency of selection.”
