Battler Woods is all heart...

Sheffield United boss Bryan Robson today backed Sheffield world champion light-heavyweight Clinton Woods in his title defence later this month.

"I met Dennis Hobson (promoter) and Clinton when I was in Vegas for the Ricky Hatton fight in June," said Robson.

"I'm hoping to be there to see Clinton retain his title. It's fantastic for Sheffield as we don't get many British boxers competing at this level now.

"I've seen Clinton box and he's shown a massive heart and plenty of skill. It's obvious he has a great strength of character and will dig in when things get hard.

"In fact, if he could play football he has all of the attributes you could wish for in a midfielder," joked Robson.

"Like football, the atmosphere the fans generate can have a real bearing on the result in boxing.

"If Sheffield's sports fans support him and make for a real patriotic crowd, it can really put the opponent out of his stride" added the ex-England captain.

Woods defends his title on September 29 at Sheffield Arena.

He meets No 1 challenger Julio Gonzalez who beat previously undefeated German star Dariusz Michalczewski in Germany.

He boasts a record of 41 wins against only three defeats.

All of his losses have come in world title fights and he has never been stopped.
