Eight players connected to Sheffield’s successful wheelchair basketball team have been selected for ParalympicsGB at London 2012.
Current Sheffield Steelers players Terry Bywater and Chesterfield-born Maddie Thompson have been called up for the respective men’s and women’s squads along with ex-players Jon Hall (Chesterfield), Ian Sagar (Barnsley), Matt Byrne, Peter Finbow, Jonathan Pollock and Dan Highcock.
Sagar, who will be making his Paralympic debut, said: “I’m so proud to have been selected to compete at London 2012. It will be so special to compete at my first Paralympics backed by the support of the British public.”
Steelers are based at the Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital and many of the players use the facilities at the English Institute of Sport.
The announcement follows a strong performance at this year’s BT Paralympic World Cup where the men won silver and the women’s team finished fourth.
GB men’s team has ambitions to win their third successive podium place at a Paralympic Games, having won bronze medals in Athens and Beijing, and the women’s team is seeking to improve on their eighth place finish.
