A league designed to get people back into basketball is to be launched in Sheffield.
Run along the lines of six-a-side football leagues the basketball version is for players who may want to try the sport for the first time or who have taken a break from the game and want to get back into it.
Beginning on June 17 with a taster session the league will have two sites; King Ecgbert’s school in Dore on Tuesdays and Hinde House school in Wincobank on Mondays and Wednesdays (all 7-10pm).
Run by Champion Hoops the leagues will be refereed by England Basketball match officials and games will be played over two halves of 18 minutes.
The leagues are for over 16s and, for now, are men only.
Carl Grizell from Champion Hoops said: “We’ve found that there are a lot of people who want to play basketball but there is simply no organised structure for them to do so unless it is in the higher standard of the Sheffield League.
“This can be a bit daunting for some people so our leagues are very much for recreational players who want to get a group of friends or work colleagues together. University students are also more than welcome.”
