SHARKS have all but booked their place in the last four of the BBL Trophy after a superb display last night at last season’s treble winners, Mersey Tigers.
True, the Tigers are a shadow of the team that swept all before it last year, but the new look Liverpool-based club were still beaten in convincing style to give Sheffield their third victory of the campaign.
Player-coach Atiba Lyons was allowed the luxury of not playing himself at all and was able to give bench players Adrian Anderson, Colin Sing and Zach Gachette significant court time.
Major summer signing Justin Dobbins again impressed with 22 points, a total only matched by point-guard Jimmy Langhurst, who continues to give Lyons food for thought over the lead guard position.
Sharks were made to work hard for a 23-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.
But after the break Sharks turned on the style. A Langhurst three capped a long 25-9 run, which gave Sheffield a 49-29 lead.
By half time Tigers had trimmed the gap slightly to 49-32.
The third quarter saw Sharks well and truly seal the match. A Mike Tuck three put them 68-42 up and Anderson ended a superb quarter to make it 78-46.
Sharks lead peaked at 96-52 on another Tuck three as Sheffield cruised home.
n Sharks scorers: Dobbins 22, Langhurst 22, Tuck 17, Babalola 15, Reinking 11, Gachette 9, Anderson 3.
