DBL Sharks Sheffield extended their winning streak to six gamesand booked a place in the British Basketball League Cup quarter-finals with a comfortable 93-64 win over Surrey Scorchers at EIS Sheffield tonight.

The Sharks, out to avenge a disappointing season-opening defeat to the Scorchers, were dealt a blow ahead of tip-off with the loss of guard Mackey McKnight to injury.

However, Sheffield made a storming start to proceedings, Chris Alexander ably filling in for McKnight as the Sharks’ primary point guard and dictating an opening 9-0 Sharks run, Zach Gachette finishing a couple of scintillating Sheffield moves.

More exhibition basketball saw Mike Tuck get off the mark before a 10-3 end to the quarter put the Sharks up 25-13.

The start of the second was a far tighter affair, before an 8-0 Surrey run brought them back to within striking distance. However the Sharks battled away, with Rob Marsden shining underneath the Surrey basket and Dirk Williams again starring in offense.

A strong 13-3 end to the half concluded with a deep jump shot from Chris Alexander finding its target and put the Sharks up 51-32 at the buzzer.

A 7-0 Sharks run at the start of the third gave them further breathing space and stretched the lead beyond 20 for the first time, Gachette pulling down a few crucial offensive rebounds to set the Sharks on their way.

Even more impressive was Sheffield’s 13-0 run midway through the final quarter, which put paid to any slim hopes of a fightback by the Scorchers.

Williams and Marsden then added gloss to the scoreline as the Sharks ran out comfortable 93-64 winners and progressed to the cup semi finalslast four.

Sharks scorers: Alexander 23, Williams 18, Gachette 15, Tuck 14, Wroblicky 11, Marsden 8, Brownell 2, Backovic 2.
