Sheffield Sharks demolished Glasgow Rocks 90-62 last night, to grab their first win of the season, writes Ben Moorcroft.
With Antone Robinson registering 23 points and 19 rebounds, the Sharks eased to a comfortable victory in Glasgow.
On Friday night, Sharks continued a torrid run of form in the BBL championship with a loss to Leicester. Yet only two nights later, Sheffield Sharks handed Glasgow their fourth defeat of the season and earned themselves a vital win.
Sharks continued their shooting struggles in the first quarter with their defence keeping them in the game. The first quarter ended 19-19. However, Sharks went ahead thanks to shooting guard Mike Cook’s ten points and his four assists in the second quarter. The Sharks pulled away for a 14 point lead at the end of the half.
Glasgow pushed early in the third to cut the lead down to just 11. However, Sharks’ Jerrold Brooks and Antone Robinson combined to stave off a Rocks run and essentially have the game won by the start of the fourth quarter.
The Sharks continued their domination in the second half to eventually win by 28 points. Robinson was helped by his sidekick, Jerrold Brooks, and the team’s sixth man Patrick Horstmann. They totalled 56 of the team’s 90 points.
The team managed to shoot 52 per cent from the field and hold their opponents to just 29 field goals. However the reason for Sharks’ domination was their ability to crash the boards; Sharks pulled down 57 rebounds to Glasgow’s 23. Their command of the glass resulted in 16 second chance points.
Sharks appeared to have fixed their defensive issues which have contributed to the team’s struggles early in this BBL season. They will now hope to build momentum with three consecutive home games, beginning with Chester Phoenix on Friday October 30. Phoenix lost last night against London Lions 87-72.
