The Sharks are closing in on their first signing of the summer.

Player-coach Atiba Lyons has returned to America to attend summer basketball camps and keep in contact with the club’s overseas players. But The Star understands the BBL Cup winners are on the verge of signing a key member of last year’s successful squad.

Lyons has made no secret of his desire to keep all of the squad who finished third in the league and runners-up to Mersey Tigers in the play-offs. Crucial to maintaining a strong squad is recruiting players who won’t take up the limited number of permit slots available.

Sharks have traditionally had a strong core of British passport holding players and it is thought it is one of this group who is ready to put pen to paper.

Steve Dagostino, Mike Tuck, Olu Babalola and Lyons fit into this category. Of the other three Babalola would be the highest profile recruit having played for the Tigers and perennial trophy winners Newcastle Eagles during an illustrious BBL career.
