ATIBA Lyons will concentrate on coaching Sheffield Sharks next season after announcing he is retiring from playing.
American Lyons, who is also a director of the Sharks has been combining the two roles since being named as player-coach in 2008.
He said it was the right time to make the decision: “It’s something that I have been thinking about for a while.
“Combining the jobs is difficult and now we’re running the Junior Sharks programme I’m looking after four or five different teams. I enjoyed playing but coaching is something that I really want to do so it makes sense that I do this now.”
Sharks had a disappointing campaign last season, but have won the BBL Cup twice and finished runner-up in both the league and the play-offs during Lyons’ spell as both a player and a coach.
The Star understands Lyons will register as a player next season but will opt for a suit rather than playing kit during games to prevent any temptation to play himself.
