Youngsters battle it out for European places

Have your say

The English Under 20 and 23 Championships take place at Bedford today and Sunday, with places at stake for the European Junior Championships.

At under-23 level, Mukhtar Mohammed (City of Sheffield) has entered the 800 metres which could produce a close race with Sale runner Nial Brooks, both athletes being within one 10th of a second of each other at the top of this year’s rankings. City of Sheffield sprinters Ricky Reeves (100m), Todd Marshall (200m) and Luke Edwards (400m) are in action while Oxford student Andy Heyes (Hallamshire) should make an impact in the 1500m. In the field events, combined eventer Daniel Gardiner (City of Sheffield) goes for the long jump.

In the under-23 women’s section, Tesni Ward (City of Sheffield) is favourite for the javelin whilst her teammates Katie Sockett and Rosie Marino contest the 400m hurdles.

In the under-20 men’s age group, Rotherham pair Ben Shields and Jordan Carter (both 100m) should do well.
