Sheffield runner misses out in big race

South Yorkshire runners are in action today when the Northern Cross Country Championships take place at St Helens

Andy Heyes (Hallamshire) is unlikely to run which severely weakens Hallamshire’s prospects in the team race.

Without Hatti Archer, Hallam cannot expect to repeat last year’s silver medals in the team race and the best hopes lie with Rotherham. Led by Laura Spence, they took the Yorkshire title and will be looking to improve on last year’s fifth place in the Northern.

The younger age groups should see some good performances. Luke Cotter (Rotherham), runner up in the Yorkshire at u20 level and third placed Bertie Houghton (Doncaster) should be well placed whilst in the u17 age group City of Sheffield in the boys and Hallamshire in the girls aim to add to their Yorkshire team victories. James Gormley and Jonathon Shield should be among the leaders.

Last year’s u13 girls winner, Amelia Lancaster (heffield) moves up to the u15 agegroup where she clashes again with Alice Moore (Barnsley) who beat her in the Yorkshire.

In the under 13 girls section Hallamshire won the team race and supplied the individual winner in Tilly Simpson and should do well again.
