Kallenberg was prominent after only 200 metres and he gradually eased his way further ahead so that he was some 200 metres clear at the finish which he reached in 32:11. Perhaps it was not as easy as it looked for the Cardiff athlete. Afterwards he said: 'The course was a lot harder than I expected and I found the last 2K was very hard work.' This was hardly surprising as he was feeling his way back to competitive action after a hip problem. 'I wanted a race before I attempt the Cardiff Half Marathon, and this fitted perfectly being not too far away from Leeming Bar in North Yorkshire where I am based in the RAF.' The Cardiff man boasts a best of 30:33 so he was operating well below his best. Runner up was Joe Sagar, of Spenborough, who was starting a particularly gruelling day. He was dashing straight off to Manchester where he was running for his club in the Northern Road Relay Championship. City of Sheffield and Dearne junior runner Joseph Newman-Billington took third place, one better and slightly faster (33:44) than last year despite concentrating on his number one sport, tennis, in recent months. He has clearly not lost any of his running fitness. His running, he says, can only help his tennis fitness as he embarks on a degree course in sports psychology at Loughborough. Apart from Newman-Billington, Hallamshire's Zal Mellard was the first local runner in fifth place whilst a strong Steel City Striders presence was led by Stuart Carrick and Liam Turner, seventh and ninth. Top veteran was Peter Tallents (Doncaster) 14th in 36:27. A fine run by Nicola Holland gave her the women's title in 37:50. A talented all round sportswoman from Dronfield, she is hardly a 'serious' runner, not being a member of a club. However, that could soon change and she looks set to join Steel City Striders who had Ashleigh Barron and Nicola Birch third and fourth woman inSunday's race. Holland was always in control although runner up Elaine Livera (Biggleswade) never gave up the chase.
