Rotherham women fifth in national event

Northern champions Rotherham ran well to take fifth place in the women’s English Cross Country Relay Championships at Mansfield. Following Steph Burns (10:36) and Sam Johnson (10:47), Laura Spence was the fastest Rotherham runner picking up six places on the last stage.

Rotherham were 10th in the junior women’s race through Natasha Hatswell (8:53), Mary Jenkinson (9:45) and Jessica Mangham (10:11).

Hallamshire finished fifth in the Under 13 girls race. Tilly Simpson gave them a superb start finishing second on the opening stage in 7:17 which was fourth fastest of the race before handing over to Eve Crownshaw and, finally, Saskia Huxham. In the U17 men’s race City of Sheffield took ninth place. Josh Naisbitt (9:17) started them off in ninth place and he was followed by Jonathan Shields (9:43) and Aaron Thorpe (10:13). Sheffield also did well in the U15 boys race finishing 13th with Rotherham in 14th. There was a fine run from Hallamshire’s Cameron Bell whose time of 6:33 in sixth place was the ninth fastest of the race.

City of Sheffield were 11th in the U15 girls race with Amelia Lancaster their fastest with 7:28 whilst Hallamshire, led by Charlotte Slack, were 14th in the U17 women’s race.

In the Guy Fawkes 10 mile race at Ripley Hallamshire’s Sally Fawcett was third woman.
