City of Sheffield made a great start to their British League (Premier Division) at Cardiff finishing third. They were missing some top men and were further weakened when hammer thrower Matt Lambley withdrew due to food poisoning.
Newly promoted, Sheffield were looking to consolidate their position in the top flight but finished up challenging for the lead. At the end they were behind leaders Birchfield and just two adrift of runners up Woodford Green.
Former European bronze medallist Sam Ellis won the 800 metres, running a good tactical race. Strong winds helped the sprinters and long jumpers but were a hindrance to the middle distance runners and Barnsley man Ellis’s time of 1:53.24 was irrelevant. The event was Sheffield’s best with Steve Evison winning the B race in 1:55.1. Sheffield top 800 metre runner Mukhtar Mohammed opted for the 1500 metres and beat a quality field in 3:53.92.
Matt Hudson won the 110 metre hurdles for Sheffield in 13.84, although it was wind assisted, and Roger Skedd was runner up in the B race (14.55) . Lee Doran had three metres to spare when winning the javelin for Sheffield, his 75.69 metres beating his previous best. Unusually for a middle distance runner, Ellis showed his versatility by placing second in the B event with 56.25.
Luke Cutts was runner up in the pole vault for Sheffield with 5.20 as well as contributing points in long and high jump.
Richard Buck was third in the B 200 metres in 21.4 and contributed a 45.6 second relay leg when Sheffield finished a close second in the four by 400 metres.
Luke Edwards (49.3) was second in the B 400 (49.3) and Tom Grantham, third in the B 400 hurdles (54.55). There was a useful contribution for Sheffield from Graeme Matthews, fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

Doncaster won a close contest over City of Sheffield in the second Northern League (Division 3EC) at Doncaster on Saturday.
Dave Budd had three wins for Sheffield, taking the 110 hurdles (17.2), the long jump (6.48) as well as his speciality, the triple jump (13.21).
In the women’s match Sheffield’s Theodora Spathis went one better winning the shot (10.64), javelin (33.69), long jump (5.29) and high jump (1.62).
