SHEFFIELD is in talks to bring the Russian athletics team to the city before next year’s Olympic Games in London.

Athletics promoter Ian Stewart revealed to The Star that he has put the Russian federation in touch with Sheffield Council with a view to using the sports venues in the East End.

He said: “I know Sheffield is hoping to bring in teams for training camps before the Games. I introduced them (council officials) to some contacts of Russian athletics I know at a recent convention in Tenerife. Birmingham has already shown a lot of vision by signing up the American and Jamaican teams to pre-Games camps. How Sheffield progress from here is up to them.”

Yuri Matischen who is chairman of the sport, leisure and tourism group for the Sheffield city region, Local Enterprise Partnership, welcomed the move.

He said: “Teams coming to the city will obviously spend money, which will boost the economy. But it is the long-term partnerships between the city and the countries and sports that are most valuable.”
