Rotherham were impressive winners of the women’s four-stage event at the Yorkshire Road Relay Championships at Carnegie, Leeds.
Their lead runner Jenny Blizard set the pace on the opening stage and finished almost a minute faster than Katie Walshaw running for defending champions Holmfirth. Blizard’s time, 14:36, was the fastest of the race.
Steph Burns, Robyn Lanceley and Jessica Fawcett kept the Rotherham colours well clear of Holmfirth with Bingley taking the bronze medals.
In the men’s six stage relay, won by Keighley and Craven, Rotherham just missed out on the medals finishing fourth. There was more success for Rotherham in the U17 women’s three-stage relay, this time by a massive margin of over four minutes.
Jessica Mangham set the standard for Rotherham on the first stage with third place before Emma Dutton and Bonnie Smith went into a commanding lead. Hallamshire did not field a team but their athlete Fiona Bell ran on the opening leg and led in 15:59, the fastest time of the race.
Hallamshire only had one runner in the U17 men’s relay, Tom Bains, who led the field home on the first stage. Rotherham finished fourth.
