Adam Hague (Dearne ALC) defends his U20 pole vault title in the English Age Group Championships which take place at the EIS today and tomorrow.
Hague, runner up in the senior championships, is having an outstanding indoor season which has seen him raise the UK junior record to 5.55. It would be no surprise to see him match that or even beat it.
Other South Yorkshire athletes in the U20 events include Joe McGrath (Doncaster) in the 60m, Lee Thompson (Rotherham) in the 400 and Matthew Miller (City of Sheffield) in the long jump.
In the U20 women’s events City of Sheffield sprinter Kristie Edwards contests both sprints whilst the talented Chesterfield twins Ella Barrett (200 and 400) and Alicia (60 hurdles) should be prominent. In the field events Abigail Roberts (Dearne ALC) is favourite for the pole vault and Toni Buckingham (Barnsley AC) is a medal contender in the shot.
At U17 level Billie-Jo Harris, last year’s U15 gold medallist, goes for both sprints while Oliver Dane (City of Sheffield) in the 800 and Leo Rowley (Rotherham) in the shot should do well.
In the youngest age group, the U15, Tilly Simpson (Hallamshire), decisive winner of the Northern title, goes for the 800m just a week after her bronze medal in the National cross country. In the boys events Hallamshire’s Jacques Etia is listed for both sprints.
