Athletics: Cutts targets Sheffield glory

Sheffield pole-vaulter Luke Cutts has a lot to look forward to, but his sights are firmly set on glory on the home front this weekend.

Cutts will be one to watch when the Sainsburys British Athletics Indoor Championships begin in the English Institute of Sport today, with the Dearne ALC athlete expected to have a spring in his step after breaking a 12-year-old British indoor record in Rouen, France, at the end of last month, with a 5.83m jump.

Coming up on the horizon are the World Indoor Championships in Sopot, Poland, on March 9 and there are the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the summer. However, Cutts is not paying too much attention to what lies ahead.

“Things have been going well. It started back in December when I jumped a PB and then obviously last month I broke the British record, so it’s all going really well,” he said.

“I have goals like everyone else. I have the World Indoors coming up and I am aiming for gold in the Commonwealth Games, but I won’t worry about them just yet.

“I don’t like to look too far, I take each competition at a time and then take it from there.”

Confidence will be high and the roar of the home crowd will probably give Cutts an extra bit of momentum for his event.

“I’m coming home to win it,” he said. “I’ve finished second four times, so I’m here to finally win it.

“It’s good to be coming home and taking part in a big event like this.

“My partner and my family will be there to watch, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Cutts, who turns 26 on Tuesday, is one of a number of South Yorkshire athletes taking part in the meeting, including City of Sheffield decathletes John Lane and Daniel Gardiner and 1500m runner Lee Emanue, who has jetted in from the US for the event as he aims for a place in the World Indoor Championships.

Sheffield RC’s Mukhtar Mohammed, too, has his eye on a ticket to Poland in the 800m.
