Andy Heyes hopes for a repeat of outstanding performance

Have your say

The climax of the Cross Country season, the National Championships, take place at Parliament Hill, London, tomorrow .

Andy Heyes leads the Hallamshire team and he will be looking of a repeat of last year’s performance when he had an outstanding run to finish third.

He has not quite been in that sort of form recently and finished eighth in the Northern Championships but he is a classy enough athlete to challenge for a medal again.

Steven Bayton, Dave Archer, Andrew Challenger, Tom Jenkins and Rob Little form a solid squad in support of Heyes.

In the women’s race Rotherham, bronze medallists last year, could be serious challengers again having won the Yorkshire and Northern titles this year. Sam Johnson, Robyn Lanceley, Annabelle Grady and Jess Fawcett were the counters in the Northern and will be all out for further success.

James Gormley (City of Sheffield) has already won the Yorkshire and Northern titles this year at under 17 level and it would be no surprise to see him fighting it out for the National title. Hallamshire’s Tilly Simpson is another Yorkshire and Northern champion going for a clean sweep in the under 15 girls race. In this age group City of Sheffield should challenge for the team race with Emily Simpson, Amelia Lancaster, Ana Garcia and Mariella DeLara. They have already won the Yorkshire and Northern team titles.
