Athletics: Triple test for Jessica Ennis on home territory

JESSICA Ennis is entered for three events at the Northern Indoor Championships at her home venue, Sheffield's EIS this weekend.

The heptatlon star is listed for the shot, high jump and 60 metres hurdles. The shot is scheduled for 10:30am today with the hurdles at 11:00 and the high jump for 2:30 tomorrow

With an indoor season which targets the European Indoor Championships in Paris in March, Ennis has her first major competition of the winter in Glasgow in two week and the Sheffield meeting will give her a good guide to her progress.

In the shot she faces tough opposition from her City of Sheffield teammate, Amy Hill, as well as Jasmin Spencer (Chesterfield) whilst the high jump sees her up against one of Britain's brightest prospects, Vicki Hubbard, although there is some doubt about Hubbard's fitness.

In the hurdles there are few who can match her anywhere in the world.

Former Rotherham athlete Louise Bloor (Trafford) attempts a treble in the 60 and 200 metres as well as the long jump.

City of Sheffield pair Todd Marshall and Ricky Reeves contest the 60m with Marshall also listed for the 400 where his teammate, Matt Quine, is one of the favourites.

Matt Bower (Lincoln Wellington/City of Sheffield) is entered for the 800, 1500 and 3000 and could be a threat in whichever he opts for.

Rhian Hastey (City of Sheffield) will be a strong contender in the 800.

In the field events Luke Cutts (The Dearne ALC) will be looking for a good height in the pole vault in his first competition of the year whilst City of Sheffield trio Jamie Williamson, Dan Brunt and Simon Bissell are contenders for the shot.
