TWO of Doncaster’s brightest young stars - Joe Arrowsmith and Jack Barlow - contested Wheatley Hills Lawn Tennis Club’s third annual Closed Championships men’s singles final.

Having seen off the older guard in their respective semi-finals, Arrowsmith served up a 7-6, 6-1 win over his great rival and friend.

Arrowsmith’s greater versatility in his shot-making saw him edge a final in which both players played with a lot of attacking flair.

Coach Lucy Wright defeated ladies’ captain Rosie Crowley in the ladies’ singles final for the third year in succession.

Although well beaten 6-0, 6-2, Crowley did manage to double the number of games she won in the 2010 final

The match of the day was the men’s doubles final where Jake Prime’s youth and Rick Chapel’s craft and guile saw them net a hard-earned 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win over big hitting Jack Pye and serve and volleyer Neil Pratt.

Another two teenagers held centre stage in the ladies’ doubles. Katrina Warnes carried a tired Lucy Wright, playing in her third final, to 6-3,6-0 victory over Ellie Watson and Maria Gray.

Simon Massey had earlier added the power to Wright’s touch play as they won the mixed doubles final against Pam Green and newcomer Brett Pendry, who didn’t lack for support on the day.

Tennis continues throughout the winter at the club. Juniors are catered for on Saturday mornings with adult sessions being on held on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There is a special ladies’ beginners class on Friday starting at 5pm.
