Ace Elliott is outsprinted

CYCLINGAFTER winning the previous two rounds, Sheffield cyclist Malcolm Elliott had to settle for third spot in the final round of the National Elite Circuit Series at Warwick.

Elliott, the 46-year-old Pinarello RT rider, was out-sprinted for second spot by rival Kristian House at the end of the one-hour-plus-five-lap event.

After victories in the Newport Nocturne and London Grand Prix over the last fortnight, Elliott looked set for another win when he broke free of the bunch midway through the tight, twisting circuit around the Midlands town.

But several riders followed him up the road and one - New Zealander Gordon McCauley - attacked again with about 15 minutes remaining and went on to a solo victory, while House beat Elliott in the sprint.

That result leaves Elliott fifth in the final overall standings, while Thurcroft racer Russell Downing had to settle for second overall after a nightmare final event.

Riding for an American professional outfit, Downing crashed into the barriers during the race after overshooting a corner, and although he picked himself up and continued, he was lapped by the front runners, ruling himself out of gaining any extra points.

"The race was totally dominated by the PCA boys," he explained, referring to the Plowman Craven Racing Team who had riders in first and third place going into the Warwick event.

"Every time someone made a move they had a PCA guy on their wheel, and it made me frustrated, which is largely the reason why I lost concentration and crashed."
