A South Yorkshire cannabis dealer who was found with cash, drugs and jewellery is now a "changed man," Sheffield Crown Court has heard.

Police searched Jack Binns' black Vauxhall Astra on Bank End Road, Barnsley, after they smelled cannabis, at 11.55am, on June 17, 2019.

Prosecutor Louise Reevell said the officers found £580 in cash and £335 of the Class B drug, as well as drugs paraphernalia and two mobile phones which contained requests for drugs.

An Armani watch and a gold chain were found in a safe in the car, as well as a bank book showing a recent £10,000 deposit.

But an investigation revealed the items were bought after Binns received an insurance payout following a motorcycle accident, and he had to store them in the car following a split with his girlfriend.

A black and silver BB gun and pellets were found in the cellar of his father's house where he was living at the time, Ms Reevell added.

But he wasn’t charged with a firearms offence, the court heard.

Binns, 24, of Pontefract Road, Barnsley, pleaded guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply at the magistrates court, on November 27, last year.

James Gould, mitigating, said: "He is happy to do unpaid work at your direction.”

He read out references which described Binns as "trustworthy," "sensible," and "a changed man."

Judge Davd Dixon told him: "You have had this hanging over your head for some time and you have stayed out of trouble. That's worthy of note."

He imposed a 12 month sentence, suspended one year, and ordered 80 hours of unpaid work.
