Sheffield Wednesday on best run since Carlos as Neil Thompson furthers case for manager's job

The 57-year-old, who stepped into the vacancy left by Tony Pulis nearly six weeks ago, has overseen a run of league form that has seen the club claim 16 points from their last seven games, the club’s best seven-match run since Carlos Carvalhal collected six wins in a row late on in the 2016/17 season.
Wednesday are understood to have interviewed a number of candidates for the job but there is no indication that an appointment is especially imminent as Thompson, Lee Bullen and his other backroom staff continue their efforts.

Hide AdThe stand-in manager has refused to budge on whether he wants the job or not and speaking after their latest win at Bournemouth deflected praise onto his players.
He said: “It is an impressive run but at the end of the day it’s down to the players, they’ve done it, they’ve applied themselves to do what they need to do. In the position we’re in, we have to win football matches.
“Realistically we know, every game is a game you can lose in this division. Every manager says that and I’m no different. We have to be full tilt every game.”
There’s little respite for the Wednesday players, who make the trip to Millwall this weekend before the midweek visit of relegation rivals Wycombe.

Hide Ad“There’s a long way to go,” Thompson said. “We have got to look up and look to drag teams into it and put a bit of pressure on them. At the minute, we are doing that.
“We had a bad performance at Coventry. It was a nip and tuck game. We didn’t really perform well for whatever reason so to get a reaction and two wins against Preston and Bournemouth tells you a lot about what to the dressing room is about.
“To get a reaction after the Coventry game and get two wins, Preston and Bournemouth, it tells you a lot about the character and what’s going on in that dressing room.”
