Sheffield United turned down January approach from Championship neighbours for skipper Billy Sharp

United's neighbours were looking for a striker to give their Championship survival bid a boost, and Sharp was a player of genuine interest.

Millers boss Paul Warne made an enquiry about the Blades skipper's availability, but was told that he was going nowhere in January. Derby County, one of the Millers' relegation rivals, were also linked with a loan move for Sharp.

The Blades skipper signed a new deal at Bramall Lane in June, tying him to his boyhood club until next summer, and United would have had to subsidise Sharp's wages if he did make the temporary switch to the New York Stadium.

But with Sharp firmly in Chris Wilder's Bramall Lane plans - he started United's last Premier League outing, away at West Ham United - the interest was rebuffed.

Sharp, who turned 35 earlier this month, recently scored his 100th league goal for the Blades and his next strike will be the 250th in an illustrious career.

The striker was also linked with a move away from Bramall Lane last January, and spoke then of his determination to end his playing career at the club he has supported since childhood.

"I never got my chance to say my bit about my future," he told The Star then.

"I'd have put it to bed from day one. I didn't want to go anywhere.

"I just want to score as many goals as I can for this club and try and be a part of this club for as long as I can."
