Sheffield United fans asked to pray as famous supporter ‘seriously ill’ in hospital

One of Sheffield United’s biggest overseas fans, who has a special relationship with the club, is seriously ill in hospital.

Victor Bonett was a leading light at Visit Malta, the tourist authority which has sponsored the Blades and helped organise several training trips to the Mediterranean nation.

He became a big supporter of the club, attending games home and away, handing out awards to players and earning the nickname Mr Malta.

Gary Sinclair, stadium announcer at Bramall Lane, said his ‘special friend’ was in intensive care back in his native country and urged people to show their support.

"Victor became a passionate blades fan when our association with Visit Malta began. From that moment he became known to us all as Mr Malta and attended every match home and away and was loved by everyone,” said Gary.

“Please join me in praying for his recovery. His partner has asked that all Blades be aware of his condition and that he obviously cannot respond to messages.”
