On 31 minutes Ethan Ampadu blasted a shot towards goal and making the block was Pilgrims defender Kelland Watts.

Watts’ hands went up into the air, probably to protect his face, but they certainly appeared to be in an ‘unnatural position’ according to the laws.

Referee Lee Mason had dismissed appeals for a spot kick and the decision went to VAR, who back up the official’s call and the match remained scoreless.

Understandably, Sheffield United fans on social media were incensed.

@Blades_Mad said: “Some of the handballs given by VAR this season and then they don't give that. Ampadu shoots and the defender LITERALLY SAVES IT with his arms aloft. I'm absolutely bereft. Stunned. That's a stonewall penalty! What am I seeing??”

@KarlFParker posted: “I am absolutely gobsmacked that's not a penalty.”

@Hannahh182 added: “Completely flummoxed as to what is and isn’t a penalty these days.”

@designedbyross said: “Sign that CB up and get him in our net cause that’s a reyt save.”

And @naclayton78 posted: “How is that not a penalty? VAR is an absolute joke . Arms raised hits his arms no penalty given. Lost for words.”

Thankfully for United fans, eight minutes later, the Blades went ahead through a great Chris Basham header from Billy Sharp’s excellent cross.
