Streets Ahead, the council’s highway maintenance contractor, tweeted: “With sleet and snow showers forecast we're heading out this morning to grit #Sheffield priority routes on higher ground.”

Streets Ahead grit more than 60 per cent of Sheffield’s highway network in priority order.

First priority routes are roads which link Sheffield to other major cities and motorways, while bus routes, link roads, roads where key public service facilities are located, and rural routes make up second priority routes.

Heavy rain and winds are expected later this week, with no sign of the grey weather improving in the next seven days.
