Sheffield mum with Covid shares heartbreaking video call with family before being placed in induced coma

Susan Allsop, aged 64, has been placed in a coma in intensive care at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital to rest her body while it fights the deadly virus.

She was admitted to the Northern General Hospital last Friday after being ill for two weeks and testing positive for Covid.

Her condition has gradually deteriorated and she is now being given oxygen and is on a ventilator to help her breathe.

Her son Craig, 35, who Susan shares a home with in Gleadless, said the call with his mum, brother Lee, sister Kerry and their partners was ‘very difficult’.

He said his mum had consented to being placed in the coma to help her fight for survival but admitted that the eventual outcome is unknown.

To keep the family positive and to thank the NHS for its support, Craig is planning a 50 mile walk from his mum’s Sheffield home to Lincoln, where she has a caravan.

The money raised will be shared between the NHS in Sheffield and Lincoln.

Craig said: “Mum’s condition was critical so she needed to be placed in the coma to give her body a chance to rest so that she is stronger and can fight this.

“Not being able to see her while she has been in hospital has been hard, so a nurse helped organise a family group chat last night so that we could see and speak to her, tell her we love her and that she has to be strong because we need her home with us.”

He added: “We just have to hope that they can bring her out of the coma but we know it could be days, weeks or even months and that there is a possibility that she may never wake up.

“But we have to remain positive and that’s why I want to do the fundraising walk to give us all something to focus on and to raise awareness of how Covid is affecting more and more people that we know.”
