The doctor, from Blair Athol Road, Nether Edge, Sheffield, normally uses the bike to commute to work at Rotherham Hospital, but because he worked an extra shift further away at Doncaster Royal Infirmary last night he left it in a storage unit in his garden.

When his wife, who is also an intensive care doctor, returned home after her shift at Doncaster last night she discovered the break-in and raised the alarm.

The thief or gang involved in the theft removed the roof off the storage unit to lift the £600 Trek mountain bike out.

It is the third time the doctors, both aged 29, have had bikes stolen from their Sheffield over the last three years.

Despite improving their storage unit security after each theft, the couple have been repeatedly targeted.

They have worked as junior doctors in South Yorkshire for the last five years rotating around the various hospitals in the region every year.

The most recent theft came just hours before the couple were due to enjoy the start of well-earned week of annual leave after a challenging few months during the Covid pandemic.

They said: “It’s been pretty relentless since October with the hospitals full both with coronavirus and the backlog of other patients from the spring.

“We’ve both had rota changes and had to work extra shifts to cover the surge in demand.

“With regards to the work, on some days multiple people have died. It has been hard to see people so unwell and separated from their families. However, we genuinely both love our jobs and are lucky to work with many of our friends and plenty of inspirational colleagues.”

They said they want to raise awareness of the thefts as a warning to other bike owners to remain vigilant.

Anyone with information about the theft should call South Yorkshire Police on 101 and quote incident number 14-33130-21.

Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers, anonymously, by calling 0800 555111.
