The YSOYA celebrate the diverse range of young talented surveyors, trainees and apprentices aged 35 and under, who are helping to improve and advance local communities. They also recognise the influential future leaders of the surveying profession.

The nine award categories cover a variety of surveying disciplines, including Asset and Facilities Management, Project Management and Quantity Surveying. Former Yorkshire and Humber winners include Davina Fillingham, a Rural Land Surveyor and Partner in Stephenson & Son Chartered Surveyors Auctioneers and Valuers in York. She won the Rural Land category accolade for actively encouraging and supporting the use of new technologies in rural surveying, and promoting best practice in managing new data within the industry.

The overall esteemed ‘RICS Matrics UK Young Surveyor of the Year’ title is awarded to the professional who has not only achieved great success in their respective role and sector, but who also demonstrates an unwavering commitment to improving the industry and the wider profession.

Leanne Owen, Managing Quantity Surveyor at Faithful+Gould in Leeds won the title back in 2015 for leading a national delivery programme of unique care homes, with innovative dementia design features, on a budget for Sanctuary Housing. The judging panel were also impressed with her dedication and commitment to raising awareness of the vast range of careers available to all, by visiting and speaking to students at schools, colleges and universities.

Leanne said: “It’s wonderful to be recognised by the RICS Matrics Young Surveyors of the Year Awards. There’s a big misconception that surveyors all wear hard hats and work on building sites. These Awards bring awareness to the diverse range of surveying roles available for all, not to mention those in the industry having hugely rewarding and successful careers.”

Anna Keys, Chair of the RICS UK Matrics Board - a networking and support group for young surveyors - is heading up this year’s judging panel. She added: “The judging panel will once again be looking for ambassadors who are not only excelling in their roles, but also giving something back to the profession, whether that be through mentoring others or getting involved in careers events to inspire the next generation. This year is also the 150th Anniversary of RICS, so there’s never been a better time for surveying firms – however large or small - to showcase the achievements of their young professionals.”

Anna, a chartered quantity surveyor at calfordseaden adds: “As the categories cover all disciplines, the shortlisted individuals and the winners of these awards will help demonstrate the wide variety of opportunities and exciting roles there are in the industry, which in turn will inspire future talent to consider a role in the built environment.”
