Thorne Road between Clay Lane and Edenthorpe will be shut until February 11 while engineers haul a new bridge across the carriageway into place.

The work, which started in the summer of 2019, has been dogged by delays and engineering problems, leaving thousands of Doncaster drivers frustrated by a number of road closures.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said: “We have secured possession of the railway line to remove the existing bridge deck, install new walls and fit the new deck.

"We will be working 24/7 to get the works finished and the road back open as soon as possible.

"We do know how frustrating these works have been but please bear with us. It will be a big improvement along this route once complete, and we are getting there.”

For health and safety reasons there will be no pedestrian access under the bridge but there will be mini buses available – observing Covid-19 rules - to transport pedestrians around. Sainsbury’s will be open during the works as will their access.

Signposted diversions will be in place during the closure. Anyone driving a vehicle over 14’ 3” will be signed via Armthorpe as there is the low bridge on Barnby Dun Road.

The road will reopen on February 11 at 6am.
